Irish Showbands and Beat-Groups Rare Instruments (4)

A feature of Irish '60s bands was their quality instruments. There was no shortage of Fender and Gibson guitars, Selmer saxes and Ludwig drum-kits. On these pages we share vintage photos of musicians with their instruments. Some we know, some we don't. If you can identify some of the musicians and/or their instruments, please let us know.

This has to be one of the rarest instruments I've come across. It looks like a Rickenbacker but it's not. Could this be a very young Paul Brady with The Sonnets?

......

Brendan O'Brien of The Dixies with his single-cutaway archtop Gibson (c.1965)

.......

Isn't it slightly ironic that the lead guitarist in The Fendermen played.....a Gibson! (thanks to Seán Reynolds)

Joe Barrett (The Doves) with his Fender Mustang bass (c.1975)

Mick Tyrrell (Framus bass), Liam O'Reilly (Hofner) and Freddie Cutland (Burns) of The Red 7 (c.1963)

One of the rarest! A Vox Mark VI Phantom owned by a member of The Woodpeckers (c.1965)

This guitarist with The Signets has a rare Fender Mustang guitar. Though the Mustang bass was relatively common, the guitar was not. (thanks to Mike Niblett)

Can anyone identify this bass used by a member of The Slick Six from Cloughjordan, County Tipperary?

Tommy Fitzpatrick of The Kings Showband pictured in Dublin's Olympic Ballroom playing his sunburst Gibson 335

Another Fender Mustang bass - the band is Jed & The Southern Express

Looks like a Gibson but it isn't. It's a Hagstrom (Swedish) owned by The Slick Six guitarist?

Strangers' guitarist Len Guest with his Candy Apple Red Fender Stratocaster and Vox AC 30 (c.1965) (thanks to Maxie McEvoy)
